Can't you get enough of the golden-yellow rapeseed fields? On this page you will find out when you can enjoy the bright play of colors.
When is the flowering time of rapeseed?
The flowering period of rapeseed extends from April to August, with the main flowering period occurring from May to July. This creates golden-yellow rapeseed fields, which can cause problems for allergy sufferers due to the pollen count.
From harvest to re-bloom
- Rapeseed is sown in late summer
- The plant has to overwinter until it flowers
- the first flowers appear in April
- from May to July is the main flowering time
- In July the rapeseed is ripe and is harvested
- some of the subsequent blooms are still in the fields in August
Flowering time wasted
The rapeseed blooms over a very long period of four weeks. New flowers are constantly forming, so the complete development of the rapeseed buds is delayed. The main shoots bloom first, then the side shoots. This leads to irregularities that have a negative impact on the harvest yield. Rapeseed is considered ripe when dark pods with black seeds have formed from the yellow inflorescences. It can only be threshed when moisture is low. However, the growth of the side shoots lags behind the main shoots, so some of them still have to be harvested while they are still green.
Information for allergy sufferers
Many people react allergically to the pollen caused by rapeseed flowers. As early as April, symptoms such as itchy, swollen and watery eyes and a runny nose threaten. However, these body reactions mainly cause problems during the main flowering period from May to July. Even afterwards, those affected often still have to struggle with the symptoms. The rapeseed plant continues to bloom until August.
