When is the flowering time of the iris?

The flowering period of irises varies depending on the species and subspecies: smaller bearded irises (20-40 cm) bloom from April, medium-sized ones (50-70 cm) between May and June, while larger specimens (over 100 cm) show their flowers in June at the earliest.

Different species bloom at different times of the year

Basically, the iris is a plant species that is also hardy in this country. The energy is stored in the rhizome during the winter months and used in spring to form the pointed leaves and magnificent flowers. It is difficult to specify a fixed flowering time for the entire plant family because the different subspecies flower at different times and also ripen their seeds differently. Basically, when it comes to bearded irises, lower subspecies usually bloom before the larger ones:

  • 20 to 40 centimeters height: flowering from April
  • 50 to 70 centimeters growth height: flowering between May and June
  • over 100 centimeters high: flowering from June at the earliest

Tips & Tricks

The different types of irises sometimes have quite different location requirements, but most specimens in the outdoor bed cope well with dry summer phases thanks to the moisture stored in the rhizome. You should therefore not water the plants too much even during the flowering period if there is a risk of waterlogging at the location.
