If you like to eat a lot of fruit or love to spice up your yoghurt with fruit, you should stock up on different types of preserved fruit. It is possible to buy canned goods or to preserve your favorite fruit yourself and refine it to your personal taste.

How to properly preserve fruit?

Apples, pears, cherries, mirabelle plums, plums, peaches and blueberries are suitable for canning fruit. You will need mason jars, sugar solution and a preserving machine or oven. The fruit is prepared, poured into the glass, covered with the sugar solution and boiled down.

Which fruit is suitable for preserving?

In principle, you can preserve almost any fruit. For example,are well suited

  • Apples and Pears
  • Cherries
  • Mirabelle plums and plums
  • Peaches
  • Blueberries

Strawberries, raspberries and blackberries, for example, are not so suitable. They quickly become mushy when boiled.

What tools do you need for preserving?

In addition to a knife and peeler, you will need mason jars. Here you can choose between twist-off jars, jars with swing tops and preserving jars with glass lids and rubber rings. If you can preserve a lot, you should think about purchasing an automatic preserving machine. However, glasses can also be boiled in the oven, and individual glasses can even be boiled in a tall cooking pot.

How to preserve fruit properly

  1. Buy fresh fruit if possible. Freshly harvested fruit from the garden is best.
  2. Wash the fruit thoroughly.
  3. If necessary, bruises are removed, the fruit is stoned, cored and peeled.
  4. Once the fruit is prepared, sterilize your preserving jars in boiling water or in the oven at 100 degrees for 10 minutes.
  5. Fill the fruit into the glasses. There should be about 2 cm of space left up to the edge of the glass.
  6. Now prepare a sugar solution to cover the fruit (1 liter of water and about 400 g of sugar).
  7. Boil the stock until the sugar has dissolved and then pour it hot over the fruit. This should be completely covered.
  8. Seal the jars and boil them.

In the preserving machine

Don't place the glasses too close to each other and fill with water until the glasses are half full. Then cook the fruit for 30 to 40 minutes at 90 degrees. Please note the information provided by the boiler manufacturer.

In the oven

Preheat the oven and place the glasses in the drip pan. Pour about 2 cm of water. Also boil the jars for 30 to 40 minutes at 90 to 100 degrees.

After the preserving time, the glasses remain in the kettle or oven for some time and then cool completely under a tea towel.
