What is the best way to skin hazelnuts?

Shelling hazelnuts is best done by roasting them in a pan or in the oven. The warmed and cracked skin can then be easily rubbed off in the tea towel. Alternatively, you can scald the nuts with boiling water, but this method is more laborious and offers less roasted flavor.

In order to shell hazelnuts, they must first be removed from the hard shell and then roasted.

  1. Take a nutcracker and use it to remove the nuts from their shells.
  2. Take a large, preferably coated pan and heat it on the stove.
  3. Put in the cracked nuts and roast them without adding fat.
  4. Always swing the pan back and forth to prevent the nuts from burning and spoiling the taste.
  5. If the pan is ovenproof, you can put it in the oven with the nuts at 180 degrees for about ten minutes.

The heat causes the thin shell of the nuts to dry out and crack.

  1. Check the roasting so that the nuts don't burn in the oven.
  2. If the skins have burst open, remove the pan from the stove or oven and pour the nuts onto a clean tea towel.
  3. Fold the corners of the cloth inwards over the nuts.
  4. Rub it with the flat of your hands so that the shell comes away from the nuts.
  5. Keep sorting out the peeled nuts.

Repeat the process until all the nuts have no skin left.

  1. You can also put the hazelnuts back in the pan or oven if the skin is not yet sufficiently toasted.
  2. It is also possible to place the nuts under the grill for a short time until the skin bursts.
  3. Heating in the microwave for about a minute and a half also produces good results. However, the nuts peeled in this way lack the delicious roasted aromas.

Similar to almonds, the cracked hazelnuts are scalded with boiling water. Heat and water loosen the brown skin and it can be peeled off. However, this work is quite laborious as the skin only comes off in small pieces. In addition, the delicious roasted aromas are missing here too.
