Which site conditions does a larch prefer?

The ideal location conditions for a larch are plenty of sun, enough space for a crown up to 8 meters wide, high water requirements and nutrient-rich clay soil with a pH value between 5.5 and 7. Shade should be avoided.

A place far from shadows

The larch tree is hardy and survives the cold and light winters here well. From spring onwards, however, the tree wants to stretch its newly sprouted needles towards the sun. Partial shade is just tolerable, but shade is a serious obstacle to life.

Lots of space for free development

A crown with a diameter of up to 8 m requires a lot of space. The location of the larch should therefore be generous. Other, disruptive trees or buildings have no place in their vicinity.

High water requirement

The roots of the larch must always be surrounded by moisture, because this conifer has a high water requirement.

  • the soil should be able to store water
  • Clay soil with a pH of 5.5 to 7 is ideal
  • it must not be low in nutrients
