If you want to have a garden full of flowers in spring, don't forget to plant flower bulbs in autumn. Crocuses can beautify the garden as early as March, tulips and daffodils bloom around Easter time.
When to plant flower bulbs in autumn?
Bulbs should be planted in the fall before the ground freezes. A sunny spot is chosen and the soil is loosened. The bulbs are inserted into the ground three times as deep as their thickness, covered with soil and pressed lightly.
The right place for flower bulbs
The onion and tuber plants thrive best in open and sunny places in the garden. Here you get the most light before the trees and bushes have fully developed their leaves. Onions are beautiful when they grow wild over time and then cover larger areas. When planting onions, you can give free rein to your creative skills and combine a wide variety of flower types and colors with each other. Once the bulbs are in the ground, no further care is usually required. Some bulbs require watering immediately after planting, e.g. daffodils.
Selecting onions
In addition to choosing the type of flower and color, there are other criteria to consider when buying onions. The onion should have a firm, dry texture and smooth skin. Soft or even mushy specimens have already spoiled and can no longer be planted. In general, the rule is that large onions are the better choice. Although they are more expensive, they produce stronger plants with more beautiful flowers.
Planting flower bulbs step by step
Flower bulbs must be planted as soon as possible after purchase. If this is not possible, store them in a cool, dry and dark place for a few days. A dry day is ideal for putting the bulbs in the ground. Proceed as follows:
- First loosen up the soil a little with a hoe (€139.00 on Amazon).
- Dig a planting hole that is about three times as deep as the bulb is thick.
- If the soil at the planting site is particularly clayey and impermeable, a drainage layer of sand can be added.
- Put the onion into the ground with the root base facing down.
- The location becomes particularly attractive when several onions are planted in one place.
- Cover the bulbs with soil and press them down a little.
- So that the planting location is not forgotten, simply stick a short stick into the planting location as a reminder.
