How deep should you plant tulip bulbs?

The optimal planting depth of tulip bulbs varies depending on soil conditions and climate. The rule of thumb is to plant bulbs twice as deep as they are tall. Plant about 10-15 cm deep in loamy soil, 20-25 cm deep in sandy soil and 25-30 cm deep in winter-rough locations.

Why is planting depth so relevant?

Flower bulbs are a compressed shoot, inside of which the buds and leaves of a tulip are already formed. These are surrounded by fleshy leaves that act as storage organs and a protective coat. After planting in autumn, the first step is to ensure timely rooting before winter. The enchanting tulip blossoms then rise from this base in spring.

If the bulb is too close to the surface, the leaves will sprout before the first frost only to freeze miserably. When planted too deep in the ground, tulips are forced to expend a lot of their energy just to get to the surface. They then lack the power for the flower cup.

With this planting depth you are right

Choose a spot in the bed in a sunny, wind-protected location that is characterized by nutrient-rich, loose, humus-rich and well-drained soil. Create small planting holes 15-20 cm apart, the depth of which is based on these criteria:

  • The rule of thumb for planting tulip bulbs is: plant twice as deep as the bulb is tall
  • In clay-based, firm soil, choose a value between 10 and 15 cm
  • In sandy, very loose soil, choose a value between 20 and 25 cm
  • In harsh winter locations, plant the tulip bulbs 25 to 30 cm deep

You can arrange the flower bulbs a little closer in the pot and balcony box, with a planting depth of between 8 and 12 cm. To ensure that the flower cups unfold at the same time, bulbs of different sizes are planted at correspondingly different depths.

Tip

The perfect planting depth of tulip bulbs unfortunately plays into the hands of their biggest enemy. This deep in the ground allows voles to access their favorite food unhindered. You can put a stop to the brazen activities of the voracious pests by planting the flower bulbs in the protection of a vole basket.
