Trellis fruit needs a scaffolding to which it is tied. This is how it grows into the intended, flat shape. But while the fruit bears fruit every year, the framework only needs to be provided once. If you have a little craftsmanship you can easily build it yourself.

How can I build an espalier fruit frame myself?

To build an espalier fruit frame yourself, you need wooden stakes, sturdy wire and fastening materials. Drive the post into the ground about 50 cm deep and stretch the wires at 50 cm intervals to attach the espaliered fruit to it.

Plan scaffolding

The scaffolding should be based on the shape of the trellis and also be sufficiently large from the start. Subsequent corrections are not always easy. Longevity considerations also need to be taken into account here. Some types of lumber weather more quickly than others.

Build before planting

The young tree gets its first topiary in the first year of planting. The remaining branches must be secured in a specific position to train the espaliered fruit. That's why the scaffolding is erected first and then planted.

Material for a simple scaffolding

Espalier fruit grows two-dimensionally. It's not difficult to build an accompanying framework. Even if several trees are planted, for example as a privacy screen or hedge at the property boundary, they usually remain in a straight row. You will need the following materials from the Bauhaus:

  • one thick, impregnated wooden post for every two meters of trellis length
  • but at least two pieces
  • sturdy wire
  • Fastening material

Tip

You can also use ground sleeves and cover caps that protect the posts from moisture and thus extend their life.

Instructions step by step

  1. Measure and mark the positions for the wooden posts. Also make sure that they have to be placed about 20 cm away from the fruit tree trunks.
  2. Drive all the stakes one after the other, about 50 cm deep into the ground.
  3. Stretch the first row of wire at a height of about 50 cm above the ground.
  4. Stretch two more rows of wire, with 50 cm between them.
