The ideal location for clary sage is a full sun spot with loamy-sandy, permeable soil. The plant thrives in normal garden soil, gravel beds and gravel areas, and also tolerates lime. Dry conditions are also preferred.

A loamy-sandy soil with high permeability offers optimal growth conditions for clary sage. Normal garden soil does not pose any problems. The Salvia species can also cope with the lime content in typical bed soil. The culinary herb feels just as comfortable in sandy soil with humus content.
