If ground wasps nested in the garden in the summer, the question arises as to whether the event will repeat itself the following year. In order to clarify them, it is of course important to know how wasps actually spend the winter. This much has already been said: most people don't spend it at all.
How do earth wasps overwinter in the garden?
Earth wasps do not overwinter in the garden, as only fertilized females that spend the winter in burrows overwinter. In spring they usually look for new quarters to found a new state as queen.
The short life of a wasp
A wasp's life usually only lasts a short time. The majority of a colony only lives for the preparation and rearing of the sexual animals, which ensure the preservation of the species for the next year. Workers and males die in the fall when they have fulfilled their target.
Overwintering is only intended for the fertilized females. They remain in caves in a kind of cold paralysis in which they use very little energy. In the spring they set off to found a new state as the new queen.
But they usually look for new quarters in which to build a nest. It is unlikely that a shelter in the earth will be colonized again next year, at least not by young queens of the old state.
