Don't feel like mosquito bites? It's a good thing that hot summer days not only cause the number of insects to skyrocket, but also promote growth in your herb garden. You don't even have to harvest the tasty spices and apply them to your skin to drive mosquitoes out of your garden. The spicy smell alone scares the stinging insects away. The following varieties are particularly recommended.
Which herbs are suitable for repelling mosquitoes?
Herbs that effectively repel mosquitoes include basil, catnip, lemon balm and garlic. These plants contain essential oils, the smell of which is avoided by insects and therefore serves as a natural mosquito repellent.
Herbs against mosquitoes
Many herbs contain strongly scented essential oils that stimulate your appetite and ensure that mosquitoes take flight. If you want to avoid mosquitoes in the garden, you should focus on these varieties:
- Basil
- Catnip
- Lemon balm
- garlic
Basil
Someone say again that there is no cure for mosquitoes! Basil is probably the best proof of the opposite. You don't necessarily have to plant the herb in the bed. Basil can also be grown in pots. This is particularly useful at a barbecue on the terrace because each guest can pick a few leaves to refine their salad.
Catnip
Both the gardener and the cat are happy - just not the mosquitoes. Unlike insects, cats love the smell and taste of catnip. The gardener, on the other hand, enjoys the beautiful purple flowers, which are reminiscent of lavender.
Lemon balm
With the lemony scent of the herb, a breeze from the warm south blows onto the terrace. Lemon balm not only has an excellent taste, but uninvited guests don't like it at all.
garlic
Whether protection against vampires is necessary is questionable. However, it is absolutely necessary in summer against other bloodsuckers such as mosquitoes. Here too, garlic can help with its smell.
