Mosquitoes are simply a part of summer. But that doesn't mean that you have to tolerate the insects on the terrace without further ado. Read this article to find out which remedies help keep mosquitoes away. Here you will only find organic measures that still serve their purpose and are also very easy and inexpensive to produce. It's best to see for yourself.
How can I keep mosquitoes away naturally?
To keep mosquitoes away, you can use plants with repellent smells (e.g. lemon balm, basil, lavender), use homemade mosquito spray with essential oils, install insect screens on windows and doors, and set cute traps to distract mosquitoes.
Measures
- Repel mosquitoes with plants
- Mosquito spray
- Insect screen
- Distract mosquitoes
Suitable plants
Mosquitoes are very sensitive to smells. There are aromas that attract insects, but there are also aromas that have a repellent effect. Take advantage of this effect by replanting your patio with the following plants:
- Lemon balm
- Lemongrass
- Basil
- Catnip
- Mint
- Juniper
- Lavender
- Marigold Roses
- Perlagonias
- Tomatoes
Mosquito spray
To avoid the smells, mosquito spray is also recommended. This does not mean fungicides that kill the insects (after all, only biological agents are presented here), but rather simple sprays that you spray on the skin. These are available over the counter in pharmacies (€19.00 on Amazon). However, you should first test whether you can tolerate the drug of your choice. It is then advantageous to always wear the mosquito repellent on your body. Alternatively, you can make your own mosquito spray:
- Mix hard alcohol with water and an essential oil.
- It is best to choose scents from the above-mentioned plants.
- Pour the mixture into a spray bottle and shake the essence.
- Only make small quantities.
Insect screen
Fly screens are a simple and effective solution to prevent mosquitoes from entering the house. The close-meshed gauze is attached to the window frame and can be removed again in winter. High-quality products ensure a clear view and are hardly noticeable. You can even have insect screens made to measure (at an additional cost). Specimens that are already stretched into a frame are particularly stable. By the way, gauze is also available in the dimensions of a patio door.
Distract mosquitoes
Mosquitoes on the terrace or balcony can be a real nuisance. The insects only want a small piece of the sweet cake. They should get that too, but in a different place. Mix a sweet, sticky liquid (such as honey or molasses) with a little flour or cornstarch. Place the bowl in a place where mosquitoes won't bother you.
