The introduction of a bee tree in the garden begins with planting. This step deserves attention because it determines its further development. When it comes to the stinky ash, there are actually a few aspects to consider so that the young tree can survive the coming cold.
How to plant a bee tree correctly?
To successfully plant a bee tree, choose a sunny to partially shady location protected from the wind and improve the soil if necessary. Plant it in spring to give it enough growing time a few months before the frost period. Young trees require additional winter protection measures such as wrapping the trunk with fleece.
Best time to plant
A bee tree should be planted in the garden in spring. The tree with the second name velvet-haired stink ash is hardy. However, young trees are not quite as mature as older specimens. They are still sensitive to cold. If you plant them early in the year, they still have a few months to develop even more resistance.
Buy a young tree
A bee tree over 1 m tall is not one of the cheapest trees on the market. In order to meet the demand for this bee magnet, mini trees just 25 cm high are also available. This makes the purchase affordable for many garden owners. But the younger the bee tree is, the greater the risk that it will not grow successfully.
Tip
You can also propagate a bee tree easily and cheaply from seeds. However, the seedling has to spend the winter indoors until it is big enough to plant out.
Choose a good location
Don't choose just any free spot in the garden for the stinky tree. The ideal location is one where the stinky ash will feel comfortable and produce plenty of flower buds. To do this, it must necessarily offer the following conditions:
- full sun to partial shade
- wind and cold protected
Optimize soil
The bee tree grows in any soil. But the nature of the soil has a decisive influence on its lifespan. If the tree is rooted in sandy soil or in loamy, moist soil, it loses more than half of its life. It is therefore advisable to work on unsuitable soils before planting.
- Improve sandy soils with plenty of humus
- work a lot of sand into loamy, moist soils
How to plant the stinky ash
The tree is planted in a sufficiently large hole. After filling the gaps with soil, it must be watered well. The following care is important at the beginning so that rooting goes well and the young tree produces new growth quickly.
- Sprinkle horn shavings in the root area
- mulch with bark humus
- provide regular water supply
Tip
A young tree needs additional winter protection in the first few years so that it can survive the cold unscathed. The trunk should be wrapped with warming fleece.
