In stores, flower bulbs are usually sold loosely packaged. At home we then have to put them in the garden soil or in pots. Are there any set instructions on how to do this? Or do we have some leeway when planting the bulbs? We'll tell you.
How do you plant flower bulbs correctly?
Setting flower bulbs: Choose a sunny location with loose, well-drained soil. The planting depth is twice the bulb length. Leave about 8 cm between large tubers and 2-5 cm between small tubers. Press the onions firmly and moisten the soil well.
In the garden and pot
Flower bulbs can be planted directly in the garden soil. Depending on the variety, they may remain there forever after planting. Because spring bloomers such as crocuses, hyacinths, daffodils and tulips are perennial and hardy.
You can even plant flower bulbs in the lawn. Some species then continue to reproduce diligently and are therefore suitable for becoming wild.
Nobody has to own a garden to enjoy bulbous flowers. All kinds of pots and flower boxes can also be filled with them. The small “portions” are mobile and can be placed decoratively anywhere.
Note:Since the onions planted in pots are subject to temperature fluctuations outside, they must overwinter safely. Best in a cool cellar.
Planting time
Spring-blooming bulbs are hardy. They will be planted in the fall.
- The planting season begins in mid to late September
- it can be planted until the end of December
- the days shouldn't be too mild
- the ground must not be frozen
- alternatively, spring planting is possible
Frost-sensitive flower bulbs may only be planted outside after the Ice Saints. You can plant these flower bulbs in pots on the windowsill from February onwards.
Tip
For your own four walls, you can also plant flowering bulbs in spring in January.
Location and soil
Most onion plants prefer a sunny location. The garden soil must be loose and permeable. If it is too moist, the onions will rot quickly. Heavy soils can be loosened with sand. Compost before planting provides the necessary nutrients.
Flower bulbs can be planted in normal potting soil in the pot. A drainage layer made of expanded clay and sufficient drainage holes are important.
Planting data
Outdoor bulbs can be planted in rows or tuffs. Scattered planting is also possible, but the flowers will visually disappear. The following should be noted:
- Planting depth is twice the bulb length
- leave approx. 8 cm of space between large tubers
- between small tubers 2-5 cm
- Press the onion firmly
- Moisten the soil well
Tip
If you have a plague of mice in your garden, plant flower bulbs that voles don't like. You can also use special plant baskets to protect the bulbs from voles.
Quality of flower bulbs
Fresh flower bulbs have the optimal driving force. Therefore, buy these immediately before planting. Make sure that the onions are plump and undamaged. The bigger an onion is, the bigger and more beautiful it will bloom.
If you propagate the flower bulbs yourself, they may need to be dug up in the fall and stored in a cool, airy place in the winter.
