If you are planning to create new beds or paved garden areas and would like to save yourself almost all of the time-consuming, mechanical weeding in the future, you should think about laying out ground fleece. More environmentally friendly than the use of herbicides, this material is also well suited for organically managed gardens where the amount of work needs to be kept to a minimum.
What is fleece against weeds and how does it work?
Weed fleece is an environmentally friendly fabric used as a cover in the garden to prevent weed growth. Available in a variety of thicknesses, it is ideal for kitchen gardens, ornamental gardens and paving, allowing nutrients, air and water to pass through and providing a long service life.
What is weed control?
It is a fabric cover that is available in different thicknesses.
Strength | Area of operation | Info |
---|---|---|
50 g/m² | Cuttable Garden | Relatively thin, so shelf life is limited. Strong weeds could pierce the fleece. |
100 g/m² | Useful garden, ornamental garden, Japanese garden | Sturdy enough to be covered with mulch or soil. |
150 g/m² | Cuttable garden, ornamental garden, rock gardens, paths, sloping areas | Stable and also suitable for areas that are heavily overgrown with weeds. The shelf life is several years. |
300 g/m² | All areas of application already mentioned, commercial horticulture, busy paths | Very robust and durable, but relatively expensive. |
Since sunlight does not penetrate the material, photosynthesis is stopped and the wild plants die. Useful and ornamental plants, on the other hand, are optimally supplied with all nutrients, air and water due to the permeable structure.
Installation instructions for floor fleece
- First clear the area completely of weeds. If this were not done, strong weed plants could push through the thinner qualities. With thicker fabrics, weeds could grow out of the planting holes.
- Lay the fleece immediately after tilling the soil so that the weeds do not germinate again immediately.
- Spread out the weed fleece (€132.00 on Amazon) and weigh it down at the edge with stones or bricks. This prevents slipping.
- If the material is to be spread on sloping areas, you must additionally secure it with ground anchors.
- Lay out all plants to check the position again later.
- Cut a cross that is not too large into the material in the places where you want to use the plants.
- After planting, place the fleece close to the stems.
- Finally, cover the ground fleece with a thin layer of soil, bark mulch or gravel.
Weed fleece under paving stones
If you want to enjoy permanently weed-free paths, we recommend laying ground fleece for the system.
Cover the already excavated area to be paved completely with the material and anchor the fabric with pegs. This is essential because the fleece is exposed to significantly greater stress.
Then apply the undercoat and smooth it carefully. You can then pave the path as desired.
Tip
Sunlight noticeably affects the durability of weed fleece. However, if you cover the material with mulch or a layer of earth, the more stable qualities will last around 25 years.
