Weeds are among the most unpopular plants in the garden and can take a lot of time to combat. As soon as the weeding was done mechanically, the first cotyledons appeared again. For ecological reasons, chemical agents should only be used carefully. If you want to suppress weeds in the bed in an environmentally friendly way and with only minimal work, fleece against weeds is a good option.,
How does foil work against weeds?
Weed fleece, also called weed film or mulch film, is an environmentally friendly method of weed control. The breathable and water-permeable film allows water, air and nutrients to reach the soil, while weed growth is effectively inhibited. It is suitable for vegetable beds, ornamental beds and other areas.
What types of weed film are there?
Weed film is often also referred to as weed fleece (mulch film, mulch fleece). It is a breathable film through which water, air and nutrients can penetrate the soil, but whose special properties effectively inhibit weed growth. It acts like a mulch layer made of organic materials. You get these in different widths so that you can adjust the film to the size of the beds.
Once laid out, the water-permeable film reduces the maintenance effort to a minimum. At the same time, the plants find optimal growth conditions.
Where can the water-permeable film be used?
In principle, this can be used anywhere where weeds need to be effectively pushed back. These can be:
- Terraces,
- Decorative beds,
- Vegetable beds,
- Rock gardens,
- graveled areas.
So that the film works optimally, you can get it in different thicknesses:
- 150 g/m² (extra strong): For extreme demands.
- 120 g/m² (strong): For very heavy weed growth. Is mainly used in sloped beds and rock gardens.
- 80 g/m² (normal): standard garden film for kitchen and ornamental gardens.
- 50 g/m² (light): Ideal for kitchen gardens.
How is weed film installed?
Laying is very easy. In addition to the water-permeable film, you need:
- Ground anchor for attachment,
- as well as potting soil, gravel, bark mulch or another top layer.
- Depending on whether it is a bed or a path: plants, gravel, chippings or paving stones as a top layer.
Before you lay the water-permeable film, you should mechanically clear the bed of weeds. Also remove any contamination such as large stones, chop up the soil thoroughly and then smooth the soil.
Continue as follows:
- Spread the fleece over the surface and cut to size if necessary.
- Attach garden foil with ground anchors.
- Cut a cross into the fabric where plants are to be planted later.
- Dig a planting hole and plant plants.
- Spread the corners of the fleece around the plant again.
- Cover with soil or another material.
- Watering and fertilizing as usual.
Tip
How long the weed fleece can suppress weeds depends on the weather conditions. Direct sunlight may cause the film to age more quickly. Evenly covered with soil, garden film can serve its purpose for 25 years.
