Why is jute winter protection recommended for plants?

Jute winter protection offers plants protection from frost as the material is robust, breathable and insulating. To make a winter shelter you will need jute, scissors, wooden stakes and rabbit wire. Place several layers around the plant and secure it with stakes and wire.

Properties of Jute

  • slightly translucent
  • robust
  • has a natural look
  • also available in bright colors or with patterns

The advantage of jute compared to foil or fleece is that the material is more permeable to air. This means there is no risk of rot due to stagnant air under the winter protection.

Note: Only cover deciduous plants with jute. Evergreen plants need sunlight in order to be able to carry out photosynthesis, which is responsible for leaf coloring. In frosty winters, you should only apply winter protection for a short time.

Make winter protection from jute

If the above-mentioned condition is taken into account, winter protection made of jute is suitable for all types of plants. It's best to use cut goods (€8.00 on Amazon) that you can buy at a hardware store. Adjust the size of your plant as needed. It is even advisable to put several layers over the plant if you cover the entire crown.

Further measures

Caution is advised, however, when there are not only sub-zero temperatures in winter, but also a lot of snow. If the crowns are extensive, the precipitation remains on the jute bag and presses on the plant. But you can also prevent this:

  • Cut four wooden stakes.
  • Put this into the ground around the plant so that a square frames the tree.
  • The distance to the plant should be at least half a meter.
  • Now throw the jute bag over the plant including the snow frame.
  • Fix the winter protection by tying it loosely(!).

Tip

Small plants require a similar procedure. In this case, just use small wooden sticks that you wrap with rabbit wire. Fill this border with leaves. Cover the crown with the jute as usual.
