What should you do if a zinc tub rusts?
If a zinc tub rusts, it is more likely to be galvanized iron. You should remove the rust with sandpaper, create a smooth transition, apply metal primer and repaint. Use gloves to avoid injury.
Rust provides information about the material composition
If your zinc tub is starting to rust, it is probably not real zinc but a galvanized iron tub. Real zinc is characterized by corrosion resistance. With iron, however, a brown coating forms on the material. However, this is not just a superficial layer. The rust eats deep into the material and makes it porous. In order to continue using the zinc tub, you should act quickly at the first signs of rust:
Remove rust

- Then create a level transition to the non-rusting material.
- Apply metal primer several times.
- Roughen up the old paint.
- If there is major damage, use a machine for sanding.
- Renew the entire coat of paint.
Attention: Rust can have very sharp edges. Under no circumstances should particles get into existing wounds. Otherwise there is a risk of blood poisoning. Therefore, be sure to wear gloves when working.
