Most perennials show their flowers in the main summer months - July and August. However, there are also species that fascinate with their blooming we alth of colors in September. We have put together our perennial favorites for late summer for you.
Color fireworks in late summer
From bright yellow blooming to impressive violet or deep blue perennials: the variety of plants that fire off their flower fireworks in late summer is very large.
Yellow flowering perennials
In late summer, for example, the pretty yellow flowers of goldenrod, coneflowers and perennial sunflowers reveal themselves. They are particularly effective in combination with various grasses, such as feather grasses.
Recommendation: When it comes to perennial sunflowers, the lemon-yellow variety “Lemon Queen” is a real highlight. Compared to other perennial sunflowers, it has quite large flowers. It also flowers extraordinarily profusely. This perennial prefers a full sun location in nutrient-rich, loamy soil.
Pink and purple flowering perennials
One of the pink and/or purple flowering highlights in the late summer perennial bed is the aster. They come in numerous types and varieties. For example, the cushion asters, which grow up to 50 centimeters high, are extremely popular. However, higher-growing species such as the smooth-leaf asters and the rough-leaf asters are also very popular. These reach heights of up to 150 centimeters.
In general, asters want the sunniest place possible and nutritious soil. Potential partners are the sunflowers mentioned above or ornamental grasses.
Blue flowering perennials
A perennial that only begins to bloom in September is the autumn monkshood. It impresses with its blue-violet flower clusters. These are so striking that they attract attention in every perennial bed. You can achieve a stylish contrast with white-flowering plants such as the autumn anemone “Honorine Jobert”, which shines brightly well into October. Both beautiful plants feel most comfortable in a partially shaded location, but are not sad about a lot of sun, as long as they get a little more water.
