The banana tree is not only a popular houseplant, it can also be seen increasingly in home gardens. At several meters tall, it is an impressive plant that unfortunately sometimes leaves its leaves drooping.
Why are my banana plant's leaves drooping?
Banana plants droop their leaves when they receive too little water, nutrients or an unsuitable environment. To save the plant, you should increase water consumption and humidity, keep the plant cool in winter and inspect for pest infestation.
Why is my banana plant drooping its leaves?
The reasons why a banana plant lets its leaves droop are varied, depending on which of the approximately 70 types of banana tree it is. There are tropical and subtropical species, but also some that come from temperate climates. The latter are even considered hardy.
Sometimes the banana tree just needs a little water, after all it is a plant with high water and nutrient requirements. If only the lower leaves are affected, then this is normal to a certain extent. Banana plants form a kind of trunk by shedding the lower leaves and continuing to sprout at the top.
Can I save my banana plant?
Check your banana tree for diseases and pests. If there is an infestation, treat the plant immediately. After about four to six years, it is completely normal for a banana plant to die, and then you can no longer save the plant.
First aid for hanging leaves:
- water when the soil is very dry
- Increase in humidity
- keep cool in winter
- inspect for pest infestation and treat immediately if necessary
Why does the banana plant need winter rest?
Most types of banana plants enjoy hibernation or a cool winter. During this time the plant gains strength for the next phase of vegetation. After all, it will then grow about one centimeter a day and sprout a new leaf about every week. If there is no break, the banana tree appears limp and leaves its leaves drooping.
The most important things in brief:
- approx. 70 species with different needs
- generally need a lot of water and plenty of nutrients
- usually a hibernation period is necessary
- bright, warm location without wind or drafts
- It's better to avoid the blazing sun
Tip
Give your banana plant a break in a cool place in winter so that it can gather enough strength for the coming growing season.
