Nothing is easier. than propagating a plant via cuttings. This method is particularly useful for the UFO plant. Are you looking for detailed step-by-step instructions for this project? Then you have come to the right place on this page. Below you will find helpful tips and information about offshoots of the UFO plant.

How do you propagate Pilea (UFO plant) through cuttings?

To propagate Pilea through cuttings, take a cutting from the mother plant, plant it in a nursery pot with high-quality substrate or place it in a glass of water until roots are visible. Then plant the cutting in a larger pot and place it in a bright location.

Different growth of cuttings

The Pilea trains two different types of investors:

  • Offshoots that grow directly on the mother plant
  • Offshoots with their own roots that protrude from the ground at some distance

The former can be easily separated with a knife and multiplied according to the following instructions. To do this, you should cut off a small part of the root. In order to obtain separately growing offshoots, it is necessary to dig up the mother plant within a radius of 3 cm. The cuttings have grown underground with the original plant. Here too, separate part of the root.

Note: To ensure that the mother plant recovers well from division and that the young shoots grow well, a clean cut is essential. Only use tools that you have previously disinfected. It should also be a sharp knife. Do not saw at the root so that it frays and certainly do not tear the root off with force.

Instructions for Propagation

Once you have internalized the propagation procedure, it is child's play to expand your inventory of UFO plants. You can take offshoots all year round. This is how you go about growing new plants:

  • take as many cuttings as you like from the mother plant
  • plant in prepared nursery pots
  • alternatively place in a glass of water until visible roots have formed

Note: Pilea roots are very delicate. If you initially grow the young UFO plants in a glass of water, you risk damaging them during subsequent planting. It is therefore advisable to plant the cuttings in the ground immediately. However, they then grow more slowly.

Demands on the cultivation pot

The UFO plant needs a lot of nutrients for he althy growth. Conventional potting soil (€12.00 at Amazon) from the supermarket often does not meet this requirement. It is therefore better to spend a little more money on high-quality substrate. You also need growing pots with a diameter of at least 9 cm so that the young shoots have enough space to develop a root. The removed offshoots feel comfortable on the windowsill.
