Hydroponics, i.e. complete cultivation in water, is particularly popular with houseplants. But not every plant thrives if the root ball is permanently under water. If you would like to know whether the Clusia, also known as the balsam apple, is suitable for this type of husbandry, you can find out everything you need to know on this page.
Can you keep a Clusia in water?
The Clusia, also known as the balsam apple, is not suitable for hydroponics because it is sensitive to waterlogging and is at risk of root rot. The plant requires moderate water and slightly acidic, well-drained substrate.
The common Clusia doesn't like wet feet
Unfortunately, the balsam apple is not suitable for hydroponics. The Clusia reacts very sensitively to waterlogging. If the root ball is exposed to high humidity for a long period of time, there is a risk of root rot and the houseplant will die sooner or later. An alternation of moisture and dryness should also be avoided. On the one hand, the substrate must never be too wet, but on the other hand, the plant still needs moderate water. In this case, the risk of a fungal infection even increases.
Tip
Drainage made of clay granules or sand makes the substrate more permeable and reduces the risk of waterlogging. Also make sure there is a drainage hole in the bottom of the bucket and pour out excess water in the saucer regularly.
The right care
Do not water the Clusia until the top layer of substrate has dried. To check, use the thumb test by pressing your thumb slightly into the substrate. If you don't feel any moisture, it's time to water the plant. You should definitely use decalcified water to maintain the slightly acidic pH value of the soil. In this way you protect your houseplant from leaf discoloration and chlorosis.
Tip
Captured rainwater is particularly suitable for watering the Clusia. You can also use tap water that you let sit for two to three days.
Water from above is welcome
Clusia doesn't like standing water in the ground at all. But she has no objection to a shower from above. By gently rinsing the plant with a light stream, you not only clean the leaves but also stimulate the vitality of the balsam apple.
Exception
You can get specially bred specimens in stores that are also suitable for hydroponics. To do this, do not plant the exotic plant in soil but in clay granules. In this case, it is important to install a water level meter that shows you when new water is needed.
