Houseplants with climbing shoots create a very special look in closed rooms. However, their rapid growth requires a climbing aid. Find out here how you can easily build a usable model yourself. The implementation is easier than expected.
How do you build a climbing frame for houseplants yourself?
To build a trellis for houseplants yourself, you can use simple sticks, moss sticks, obelisks, trellises or wire arches. These aids support the growth of climbing plants such as ivy, window leaf or climbing lily.
Build your own trellis
Even with little craftsmanship experience, building a climbing aid for houseplants is child's play. Simply choose one of the following variants and follow our step-by-step instructions.
Simple stick
- insert a stick (metal or bamboo) into the bucket
- Wrap plant around it
- attach with a string
- Only tie shoots loosely, never tie them off
Moss sticks
Moss sticks are an alternative to simple, smooth trellises. In particular, they offer plants with adhesive roots the opportunity to anchor themselves deep in the moss.
- stick a thick stick into the ground
- Moisten and wring out moss to make it more durable
- Wrap moss around the stick
- attach with wire
- Tie the aerial roots of the plant to the stick
Tip
It is best to choose green wire, which is hardly noticeable in the moss.
Obelisks or pyramids
- Depending on the desired shape, insert three or four wooden sticks into the flower pot near the edge
- make sure the distances are the same
- bring the rods together over the center of the flower pot
- fix with wire or string
- Install horizontal elements as desired
Simple trellis
- place thin wooden sticks vertically next to each other at equal distances
- lay a layer of horizontal wooden strips on top
- screw at the intersection points
- put in the flower pot
Tip
By weaving willow rods into a grid, you save yourself the screws. Soak the branches beforehand to make them more pliable.
Wire arches
- the wire should be at least 2 mm thick, but can be easily bent
- use a bucket as a negative mold
- wrap the wire around the bucket
- bend the ends slightly down so you can stick them into the ground
Tip
You can build a trellis using the simplest means. For many plants, a string hanging from the ceiling or a simple net that you attach to the wall is enough.
Which houseplants need a climbing aid?
Depending on whether you offer these houseplants a climbing aid, they will form long, climbing shoots:
- Ivy
- Efeutute
- window leaf
- Passionflower
- climbing lily
- Philodendron
- Jasmine
- Wreath sling
- Dipladenia
- Climbing Ficus
- Purple Tute
- Chestnut wine
- Room wine
- Cape wine
With regular pruning you can also prevent the rampant growth if desired.
