Many gardens are enclosed exclusively by a hedge. Greenery is not always enough to keep small children or pets from leaving the property when they are unobserved. A quick remedy in this case is a fence that you can subsequently integrate into the bushes.

How can I integrate a fence into a hedge?

To put a fence in a hedge, a chain link fence is best. First cut back the hedge, mark the straight path, place the fence posts and pull the tension wire. Then integrate the wire mesh and attach the finished fence to the trees.

Which fence is suitable?

A traditional wooden fence or a fence made of plastic or metal elements is not flexible and can therefore only be placed at a certain distance from the hedge. If you have enough space, you can install such a fence as close as possible in front of or behind the previously cut back bushes.

Well suited: A fence made of wire mesh

A chain link fence (€208.00 on Amazon) can be set up quickly and easily and can be easily integrated into a hedge thanks to the material properties. You can adjust the height of the fencing to suit your individual needs.

Material list

  • wire mesh
  • Wire tensioner
  • tension wire
  • Fence posts
  • Mesh tension rods
  • Mounting clamps
  • Garden concrete
  • string
  • Wooden pegs

Tool list

  • Hedge trimmer
  • Auger
  • Shovel
  • Allen key
  • Flat-nose pliers
  • Combination pliers
  • Box wrench
  • Spirit level
  • Tape measure
  • Inch rule

Building the fence

  1. First you should cut the hedge back heavily. This is the only way you can place the fence close enough to the bushes.
  2. Depending on the growth, it can be difficult to position the fence in an exactly straight line. However, mark this as precisely as possible with small wooden pegs between which you stretch a string.
  3. Now determine the positions of the fence posts that should be placed between the bushes.
  4. Dig foundation holes. Be careful not to damage too many roots.
  5. Fill holes with concrete and place posts in them.
  6. Support the outside post with a brace. This is assembled loosely, then set in concrete and then screwed to the fence post.
  7. Cut tension wire at least 10 centimeters longer than necessary, thread it into the mandrel of the wire tensioner and tighten with a wrench.
  8. Pull the tension wire through the wire holders of the intermediate posts.
  9. Then thread through the end post and twist.
  10. Unroll a piece of wire mesh, push the mesh tension rod through the first row of mesh and insert it into the fence hooks.
  11. Unroll completely and use pliers to bend the top and bottom ends of the wire around the guy wire.
  12. If necessary, attach the finished fence to the trees using string.

Tip

You should preferably put the fence in the hedge in February or March, before it sprouts. They then come closer to the main shoots. If the bushes sprout in spring, the sterile effect of the fence is reduced by the branches.
