In March the garden awakens from hibernation and you can finally pursue your favorite hobby again. As soon as the spring flowers open their flower heads, you can start your first garden work. We would like to support you with “spring cleaning in the countryside” with this article.
What are the most important gardening tasks in March?
At the start of the gardening season in March, you should check garden tools, remove leaves and plant residues, scarify the lawn, dig up beds, cut hedges and bushes and apply compost and fertilizer. These measures promote he althy growth and lush flowers.
Get your garden tools into shape
The garden tools sat in the dark shed all winter, were not used and therefore received little attention. Before you get to work in the spring, you should check the spade, digging fork, lawn mower and edge cutter and repair any defects, if they have not already occurred in the fall.
- Remove rust from tools and blades. This can be solved with a vinegar-oil mixture or a paste made from baking soda. Let the home remedies work for a few hours and wipe off the patina.
- Replace rotten handles as they pose a risk of injury that should not be underestimated.
- Have the edges of the spade that have become dull and the blades of the lawnmower sharpened.
Remove leaves and dead plant parts
The devices are ready for use? Then you should first clear lawns and beds of fallen leaves and plant debris. This means that they do not start to rot and decompose, which can lead to acidification of the soil.
All dead plant parts are also fished out of the garden pond with a landing net.
Scarify the lawn
If the temperatures rise, you should pay a little more attention to the lawn. Use a scarifier to remove old thatch from the turf and the soil is aerated. As a result, the green sprouts strong and dense. Then treat the green areas with a little lawn fertilizer so that the necessary nutrients are available.
Digging up beds
So that soil organisms can work undisturbed during the winter, beds are often left untouched in autumn. Now in March is the time to prepare them for the new gardening season by loosening them up. Take this opportunity to also add a layer of compost to the soil, which will provide the plants with a good supply of nutrients.
Cutting hedges and bushes
Almost all hedges grow denser and more evenly if they are cut back to the desired height and width in spring. In June, only a weak correction cut is necessary, which protects the animals living in the green enclosure.
Flowering shrubs such as buddleia or hibiscus are thinned out about every two to three years. Shorten all shoots that bore flowers the previous year directly above the ground. This promotes strong new growth.
Tip
Flowering hedges are only trimmed when they have completely bloomed so as not to diminish the splendor of the flowers. So first enjoy the bright flowers and then grab the scissors.
