Naked oats are perfect for growing oat sprouts. These taste aromatic, nutty and have many times more nutrients than seeds. When dried, oat germs make a power ingredient for your morning muesli.

How do you germinate naked oats?

To germinate naked oats, place 100g of grains in a germination jar, rinse and soak in water for 8 hours. Then rinse again and tilt the glass so that the seeds are ventilated. After 3 days and daily rinsing, the sprouts are ready.

From grain to sprout

Put about 100 grams of naked oats in a germination jar and pour fresh, lukewarm tap water over the grains. Swirl the glass to loosen dirt and dust and pour out the rinse water using the strainer lid. Fill the glass with three times the amount of water and wrap it in a kitchen towel. Under these dark conditions the grains swell for at least eight hours.

Stimulate germination

Pour off the cloudy liquid after the soaking time. Rinse the seeds again and then place the sealed jar on the holder so that the opening faces downwards at an angle. The naked oat seeds benefit from good ventilation and moisture can drain away. In a bright place and with two daily rinses, the grains will germinate after about three days.

Tip

You don't need to throw away the greenish broth that you get after soaking. It is suitable as fertilizer for flowers.

Short Art Portrait

The naked oat (Avena nuda) is a type of grain within the oat genus. Its German name comes from the fact that the husk falls off completely during threshing. Compared to other types of oats, this type has a higher content of bitter substances and is higher in fat. This makes the seeds more valuable from a nutritional perspective and is suitable for a whole food diet. However, naked oats are rarely grown and are often only available in he alth food stores and organic markets.

That's why spelled oats are grown more often:

  • brings higher yields
  • is less susceptible to fungal diseases
  • Grains are firmly attached to husks, which means they are better protected

Germination success of spelled and naked oats

Oats are pre-treated. The grains are heat treated at temperatures between 80 and 90 degrees so that the husks can be removed more easily. During this process, not only the outer layers but also the fat-rich core are damaged. Such seeds are no longer able to germinate. Naked oats do not require any exposure to temperature so that their ability to germinate is retained.
