Zamioculcas zamiifolia is an impressive houseplant with leaf fronds up to 150 centimeters long and shiny, dark green leaves. The plant, which comes from East Africa, is not only very popular in German living rooms because of its interesting appearance, but also because it is considered extremely easy to care for. The plant flowers on very rare occasions.
In what conditions does the Zamioculcas plant bloom?
The flowering of the Zamioculcas zamiifolia appears extremely rarely and only under optimal conditions, such as a suitable location, correct humidity, sufficient space, loose compost-based substrate and an adequate supply of water and nutrients. The inconspicuous flower consists of a white bulb that lasts for a few weeks.
Flowers only appear under optimal conditions
In contrast to the strong and fleshy fronds, the bulb-like flowers of the plant, also known as the lucky feather, only become noticeable upon closer inspection. But then the joy is even greater because the flower may not be particularly noticeable on the outside, but it is even more sought-after due to its sheer rarity. Zamioculcas only blooms extremely rarely and only when the conditions are 100 percent right. That means
- the plant feels comfortable in its location
- it's not too light and not too dark
- the humidity is also right (not too dry and not too humid)
- it is warm enough at around 25 °C
- the planter offers enough space for the roots
- a loose, compost-based substrate was chosen
- the supply of water and nutrients is right
Appearance and development of the flower
As with all arum plants - to which Zamioculcas zamiifolia also belongs - the flower simply consists of a white spadix, which is initially surrounded by a brownish-green bract. After a few days, this bends backwards so that the flower “opens”. In contrast to the leaf stalks, the flower-bearing shoot is only about 30 centimeters high. The inconspicuous flower spadix often lasts for a few weeks before it dries up and turns brown.
Tip
Basically, it is possible to grow offspring from the seeds of Zamioculcas. However, similar to the anthurium, this undertaking is very difficult. You will have more success with propagation if you divide the plant or plant leaf cuttings.
