She stands magnificently with her dark green pin dress. Its straight shape, but also its decorative fruits, make the columnar yew a valuable structure in the garden. But how do you give it more expression and which plants can it highlight visually?
Which plants can you combine the columnar yew with?
To combine the columnar yew effectively, you can arrange it with hostas, purple bells, viburnum hydrangeas or rhododendrons. Make sure that the companion plants prefer semi-shady to shady locations and go well with the dark green color of the columnar yew.
What factors should you consider when combining the column yew?
The columnar yew does not harmonize with any plant. Before planting, it is therefore recommended to consider the following points:
- Needles: shiny, dark green
- Fruit decorations: September to January
- Location requirements: Partly shaded to shady, permeable and nutrient-rich soil
- Growth height: up to 5 m
The columnar yew tree is covered in its shiny needlework all year round. Your companion plants should match or contrast with this rather dark basic tone.
Since the columnar yew prefers a semi-shady to shady location, it is crucial to combine similar-minded plants with it. Sun lovers are therefore less suitable for a partnership with her.
Please note that although the columnar yew grows slowly, it can reach a considerable height and only at this point does it really work. Your companion plants should be positioned depending on this.
Combine columnar yew in the bed
A columnar yew tree in the bed provides structure and order. It can provide a valuable dark background to various perennials, but can also be intentionally placed in the center to contrast surrounding neighbors. Combine the columnar yew with evergreen plants, ground cover, flowering perennials or strikingly flowering trees. Every bright color shines in her presence.
The following companion plants fit in well with the columnar yew tree:
- Rhododendron
- Foam Blossom
- Elf Flower
- Funkia
- Outdoor Gloxinia
- Purple bells
Combine columnar yew with hosta
Honas go well with the columnar yew tree because they also prefer to grow in partial shade to shade rather than in full sun. Hostas also benefit visually from the presence of one or more columnar yews. Its lighter leaves are contrasted by the dark green color of the columnar yew. A combination with strikingly white, yellow or blue-leafed hostas is particularly recommended.
Combine columnar yew with purple bells
The purple bell becomes a ground cover at the foot of the columnar yew. In order for this union to be well expressed, the purple bells should be planted in groups in front of the columnar yew tree. There it will stand out fantastically against the columnar yew tree during the summer with its bright red flowers.
Combine columnar yew in the bucket
Thanks to its slow growth, the columnar yew is perfect for container cultivation and can, for example, decorate house entrances and terraces. You can plant shallow-rooted ground cover directly in the pot with the columnar yew. Larger plants, on the other hand, should find their place in a separate pot next to the columnar yew tree. The following goes wonderfully with the columnar yew tree in the bucket:
- Snowball hydrangea
- Storksbill
- Azalea
- Bellflower
Combine columnar yew with viburnum hydrangea
An intoxicating spectacle is created when you stage the columnar yew tree with the snowball hydrangea. As soon as the flowers of the viburnum hydrangea unfold in summer, they are made to sparkle by their proximity to the columnar yew tree. The preferences of the two plants also match when it comes to location.
