Every he althy, happy shrub has plenty of umbrella umbels. But the countless small flowers inside have a short lifespan. It's enough for fruit formation, but not enough for the eye. More information about the appearance of the flowers and why their late blooming is a blessing.
What do aronia flowers look like and when do they bloom?
Aronia flowers are small, white and resemble apple blossoms. They appear in umbrella-like inflorescences with 10 to 20 individual flowers and five sepals and petals. The flowering period is between May and June and lasts about 10 days, with individual flowers only lasting 3-4 days.
What do the flowers look like?
The flowers aresmall and white and look very similar to apple blossoms. This is not surprising, because apples and aronias are both rose plants, so they are related. That's why the aronia plant was given the nickname chokeberry. The larger umbels are more noticeable than the small flowers. The main features are:
- umbrella-panicled inflorescences
- with 10 to 20 individual flowers each
- each flower has five sepals and five petals
- the approximately 20 stamens are clearly visible
- Flower color is white to pale pink
- Flower diameter is approx. 1 cm
When do Aronia flowers open?
First the bare branches are covered with freshly sprouted leaves and only then are they decorated with flowers. When the first flower buds open, the second week of May has already begun. The late flowering period has its advantages, as there is little risk of frost damage. The entire flowering period lasts barely more than ten days. This is quite short compared to other flowering and fruit-bearing shrubs. The individual blossom only manages to maintain its splendor for 3-4 days before it fades.
Do the flowers appear every year?
In the first yearafter planting, Aronia usually does not bloom. All your strength goes into rooting and new shoot growth. From the second year onwards it blooms in a favorable locationevery year Aronia does not bloom when over-fertilized, heavy autumn or spring pruning and long-lasting waterlogging.
When are the flower buds created?
The aronia bush produces its flower budsin the fall of the previous year. That's why it's important to avoid cutting from fall to spring. Otherwise the flower buds will be removed too. No new buds will be formed for the upcoming flowering period.
How are the flowers pollinated?
Aronia is self-pollinating. But insects also make an important contribution to pollination. Thanks to their help, the star bush owner can harvest more in the fall

Use the richly blooming aronia as a bee pasture
Bees, bumblebees and other insects enjoy tasting the nectar of the flowers. Aronia is therefore ideal for a bee pasture or as an insect-friendly hedge. As a thank you, you can conjure up something tasty from the berries in autumn, or give them to the birds as food.
