The arum is particularly popular because of its flowers and fruit stalks. These are constructed in two parts and are visually impressive in shape and color.
What does the arum flower look like?
The flowers of the arum have alarge and conspicuous flower sheath,called spathe in Latin. In botany, this refers to a special form of bracts. In the arum, this broad bract wraps around the flower spadix. The spadix is the actual flower. Most species and varieties of arum show impressive colors on the spadix.
How do the different arum plants bloom?
The flowers of the different varieties and types of arum appearin different colors. This applies to both the bract and the cob. Popular varieties are:
- Spotted arum: greenish-white bract, with yellowish to brown-violet spad
- Italian arum: greenish bract with red edge, yellow piston
- Common arum: purple bract with black-yellow piston.
When does the arum bloom?
Most varieties of arum bloom in spring. The flowering period begins between March and April and sometimes extends into June. During this time, the plants use scents to attract insects for pollination. After the flowering period, many bright berries develop on the fruit stalks.

Many varieties of arum give off an unpleasant smell when they flower to attract insects. Do not place these plants too close to the house or a seat. You shouldn't bother your neighbors with the smell either.
