How much irrigation water does the Physalis need?

If you keep your Physalis in a pot, we recommend usingexpanded clay as a drainage layeror adding asaucer. The latter catches excess water, which the plant can absorb if necessary. But: If the water in the saucer is still there after several days, you should pour it out to prevent root rot.

It's best to water your Physalisin the morning. During hot periods in summer, you can water the plant a second timein the late afternoon or evening.

Even if the physalis needs a lot of water, especially during fruit formation, it doesn't like waterlogging any more than most other plants. So you should water the nightshade plant abundantly, but still carefully. Don't overdo the watering, otherwise the roots risk rotting.
