The abundance of flowering time for the azalea has to be paid for with worry. Because the plant attracts some pests and pathogens. When it comes to care, in the garden and in the pot, everything should run like clockwork, otherwise there can be problems.
Are there problems with azaleas?
Unfortunately, azaleas can cause many problems to their owner: yellow, brown or spotted leaves, brown flowers, leaf loss. They canbloom poorly, wilt or even completelydry upBehind this can beDiseasesandPests, but often also an incorrect location and care errors.
What problems can occur with azaleas?
If the location is not well chosen and the care does not meet its requirements, the azalea can:
- withering
- dry up
- have spotty foliage
- get yellow or brown leaves
- Losing leaves
- get brown flowers
- flowering too short or only sparsely
- Suffer frost damage
- be colonized with lichens
What diseases and pests can the azalea suffer from?
There are two diseases that the azalea mainly has to deal with: earlobe disease and powdery mildew. Spider mites and black weevils, on the other hand, are the most common pests on it. Check your azalea regularly and carefully so that you can react to any problems at an early stage with appropriate measures. It usually helps to cut off affected plant parts and dispose of them.
Which location and care mistakes should I avoid?
A location that is too shady will not produce an abundance of flowers. A location that is too moist encourages lichen colonization. Depending on the variety, you should transplant an incorrectly positioned azalea in partial shade to sunny. Indoor azaleas do not tolerate direct sun or a place near a heater. The soil must be acidic, have a pH of 4-5. It is therefore important to water the azalea with lime-free water, otherwise it will get yellow leaves (chlorosis). In addition, the soil must always be moist without causing waterlogging.
What can I do to prevent frost damage?
Garden azaleas can die of thirst when there is frost. They need some watering on frost-free winter days. Garden azaleas in pots also need to be winterized so that they can survive the winter outside safely.
Tip
Do not keep indoor azaleas too warm during the flowering period
The indoor azalea is usually given a warm place in the living room to brighten up the dreary season with its colorful blooms. Problems with the flower are inevitable because it neither likes heat nor dry heating air. It is better to place them in a cool room with 8 to 16 °C all the time, or at least at night, so that the flowers will not wilt so quickly.
