The spruce is known and popular as a Christmas tree, but is also often mentioned in connection with forest dieback. The bark beetle is often blamed for this death, but the large monocultures in the forests are also to blame.
What diseases and pests occur in spruce trees?
The most common diseases and pests in spruce trees are bark beetles, spruce gall louse, omorica dieback, red rot and Sitka spruce louse. Early control with home remedies or beneficial insects is important before the tree dies irrevocably.
A he althy spruce tree that is well cared for in a suitable location rarely suffers from pests and usually remains he althy and resilient for many years. However, a lack of nutrients and/or a lack of moisture can weaken the spruce, as can waterlogging, and pathogens then have an easy time with the tree.
What diseases can occur in a spruce?
Two diseases in particular are relatively common in spruce trees: omorica dieback and red rot. However, as the name suggests, the death of omorika does not only affect the Serbian spruce (bot. Picea omorika) but also other species, primarily young trees.
Red rot is usually only recognized very late because the fungus spreads from within. Heterobasidion annosum, the root fungus, is responsible for this disease. The core of the spruce becomes rotten and eventually dies completely.
Does a spruce tree often suffer from pests?
The most common pest on spruce trees is probably the bark beetle, but the Sitka spruce louse also often causes problems for conifers. The needles turn brown before falling off. The spruce gall louse can be kept under control with the help of beneficial insects.
Can a sick spruce tree still be saved?
Saving a sick spruce is practically only possible in the early stages. However, since many symptoms are initially quite inconspicuous, it is often too late to provide assistance. In addition, some products used to control pests or fungal infections are harmful to the environment. The use should therefore be carefully considered. However, as long as home remedies promise good success, you should use them.
Possible diseases and pests in spruce:
- bark beetle
- Spruce gall louse
- Omorikadying
- Red Rot
- Sitka spruce louse
Tip
If you discover a pest infestation or symptoms of disease on your spruce, you should act immediately, otherwise the tree can no longer be saved.
