The August apple, also known as the corn apple or white clear apple, tastes wonderfully fresh and juicy when eaten directly from the tree. However, this summer apple has disadvantages that have meant that it is no longer grown as often:
- Just a few days after harvesting, the fruits taste dry and mealy.
- For this reason they cannot be stored.
- It is susceptible to powdery mildew and apple scab.
Which new summer apple varieties are an alternative?
'Julka', 'Retina', 'Paradis Katka' or 'Piros'aresummer apple varieties, which are significantly more resistant to diseases and are pests. At the same time, the fruits can be stored for some time and remain fresh until at least the end of October.
The variety 'Galmac', bred in Switzerland, is also mildew resistant and only moderately susceptible to apple scab. However, the apples must be harvested in good time, otherwise they lose much of their pleasant sweet and sour taste.
Tip
The right time to harvest summer apples
It's better to pick summer apples a little too early than too late, because only then will they retain their aroma for some time. The summer apple varieties often have white cores, so you cannot rely on this ripeness characteristic. It is therefore better to do a cutting test: If you cut the fruit in half, small beads of juice should immediately come out. The flesh of a ripe summer apple is creamy white without a greenish tinge.
