Don't feel like colorless beds and a dreary balcony in winter? Then immerse yourself in a selection of winter-flowering plants here. The following perennials and trees do not let frost and snow stop them from creating a pretty flower dress.
Winter snowball enchants with pink and white flowers
The winter snowball (Viburnum farreri) announces itself from a distance with a seductive scent of vanilla and cloves. Anyone who follows this scent trail will encounter a pink and white floral miracle in the midst of frost and snow. In mild winter locations, the flowering period extends from November to April. If winter comes with severe frost, the flowers open from January. With a growth height of 200 to 250 cm, the scented snowball looks great in a sunny bed or large pot on the balcony.
Valuable classic for the winter bed - the unique Christmas rose
The Christmas rose develops white cupped flowers during Advent and Christmas, which harmonize wonderfully with shiny green, hand-shaped leaves. The wintry play of colors is rounded off by dark red stems, which provide elegant contrasts. For its annual appearance in the garden, the magical Helleborus niger prefers a partially shaded location in nutritious, lime-rich soil.
The premium variety Helleborus niger 'Praecox' is considered a symbol of eternal youth because it has lost none of its beauty even after 20 years in the bed. With a growth height of 10-25 cm, it transforms the winter garden into a sea of flowers from November to January. Combined with the variety 'Christmas Carol', the floral winter magic continues seamlessly from January to April.
Flowers for the winter balcony box
The winter snowball is too big for a winter-flowering balcony box. The Christmas rose, which is loyal to its location, also does not feel comfortable in the flower box. If you're thinking about having a flower-filled balcony in winter, we've put together some hardy flower beauties below that would look good in the balcony box:
- Pansies (Viola tricolor) only retreat when there is frost of -20 degrees Celsius, 20-25 cm
- Amur Adonis florets (Adonis amurensis), whose yellow flowers compete with the winter sun, 20-30 cm
- Horn violets (Viola cornuta) delight as pansies' little sisters with their winter colors, 15 cm
Since the root balls of these small winter bloomers in the balcony box are vulnerable to frosty temperatures, we recommend light winter protection. First cover the boxes with bubble wrap. Wrap colorful ribbons over the top to decoratively hide the unsightly material. Complemented with self-made stickers, you can create attractive eye-catchers that won't make your balcony feel dreary.
Tip
Fruit ornamental shrubs are the ideal complement to winter bloomers. Above all, the red carpet berry (Gaultheria procumbens) enchants us with its evergreen, shiny green leaves and bright red berries. Although these are nice to look at, they are not suitable for consumption. With a growth height of 10 to 20 cm, the decorative small shrub adorns flower boxes, pots, beds and graves all winter long.
