With its beautiful crimson flowers and impressive size of up to three meters, the Weigela Bristol Ruby, which comes from Asia, is probably the uncrowned queen of this genus and is more common than the other varieties.
How should you prune the Bristol Ruby weigela?
Section: The Bristol Ruby weigela requires regular pruning after flowering to ensure lush flowering. For aging bushes, we recommend rejuvenating pruning by cutting the plant about 20 centimeters above the ground. In the bucket, pruning and, if necessary, rejuvenation of the root ball is necessary.
The various weigelias do not differ in terms of care, but they do differ in their space requirements. While the dwarf variety “All Summer Red” only reaches a height of around 75 centimeters, the Bristol Ruby can grow four times as tall. Be sure to give it a location where it can develop well.
Pruning the Bristol Ruby properly
If you have planted a Bristol Ruby in the hedge, you should be a little careful with the usual autumn pruning for hedges. Be sure to leave a sufficient number of shoots with new flower buds, otherwise the flowers will fail next year. However, not cutting at all is a bad solution, because then your weigela will grow old and no longer bloom at all.
Regular pruning is particularly important in the pot, as the plant has less space here. Sometimes it is also necessary to rejuvenate the root ball. To do this, cut a few wedges out of the bale.
The Rejuvenation Cut
If your weigela is old, it will become extremely woody, especially in the lower area. It hardly produces any flowering shoots and therefore only a few flower buds. If you don't grab the secateurs now (€14.00 on Amazon), your weigela won't bloom in the future either.
Cut the bush about 20 centimeters above the ground and be patient. As a rule, the weigela recovers quite well from this radical cut within a few months and blooms again the spring after next.
