Hydrangeas are ericaceous plants. Like all other ericaceous plants, they needacidic soil. The pH value of the substrate can be lowered using hydrangea fertilizer, rhododendron soil or coniferous compost.
What are ericaceous plants?
Root plants are perennials and shrubs that grow well onacidic soils. They prefer to grow under coniferous trees because their falling needles result in constant acidification of the soil. Well-known ericaceous plants are rhododendrons and azaleas. A low pH value is the only thing that ericaceous plants have in common. Depending on the species, they can prefer both sunny and shady locations and the moisture requirement also varies from plant to plant.
Are hydrangeas ericaceous plants?
Hydrangeas need acidic soil for good growth and are therefore one of themoorbed plants. At a pH value of around 5 they can optimally absorb the nutrients from the soil.

As a ericaceous plant, hydrangeas require acidic soil. If the soil in your garden is not naturally acidic, you can adjust it through fertilization - hydrangea fertilizer, rhododendron soil and coniferous compost are common ways to acidify the soil.
