The uncomplicated and shade-tolerant yew trees are often planted as hedges. A yew hedge is evergreen and therefore offers protection from unwanted looks and wind all year round. But what distance from your neighbors should you keep when planting?
What distance should yew trees be from the neighboring property?
The distance between a yew hedge and the neighboring property should be at least 50 cm, and for taller plants at least 1 meter. However, different regulations may apply in individual federal states and municipalities. When planting a tall yew tree, a distance of 3 to 4 meters from the property line is recommended.
How much border distance should you keep when planting a yew tree?
First of all: You should not place a low yew hedge directly on the property line - in most federal states this is even forbidden. As a rule, the so-called border distance - i.e. the distance between the property line and the tree - is measured according to the height and width of the plant and is subject to state law.
The rule of thumb is: For trees up to two meters tall, a distance of at least 50 cm should be maintained. If the plants are taller, a distance of at least one meter applies. However, the regulations differ from federal state to federal state, and individual municipalities may have issued separate regulations.
What distance should a yew tree be from the neighboring property?
The European yew (Taxus baccata) grows up to ten meters high and only in exceptional cases reaches heights of more than 15 meters. To plant a tall-growing yew tree, this means that in many federal states you must maintain a distance of at least three to four meters from the property line.
In addition, the neighbor must not suffer any serious disadvantages by planting a yew tree, i.e. H. The tree or hedge should not shade the neighboring property too much. Also keep in mind that yew roots and overhanging branches can cause problems for neighbors and, for example, lift patio slabs.
What planting distance makes sense when planting yew trees?
For a yew hedge, you should plant the trees as closely as possible: It is therefore recommended to plant three young yew trees per meter. However, if the yew is planted as a solitary tree, you should plan the following distances:
- Columnar yew 'Fastigata Robusta': one to three meters planting distance
- Ground cover grater 'Repandens': 1 per square meter
- European Yew: 2 meters
Also note that there is approximately 90 centimeters of space left behind a two meter high yew hedge. This makes it easier for you to prune later, and the hedge can also grow wider.

If you plant a tree, your neighbor has up to five years to object, according to current court rulings. After that, he usually has to accept the tree, especially since felling or pruning an older tree is not so easy. Nevertheless, the rule of mutual consideration applies: the tree must not unduly restrict your neighbor's use of the property.
