Savoy cabbage is a type of cabbage with curly leaves and a mildly aromatic taste. The annual plant is available in numerous varieties for early, medium and late cultivation. This means that the savoy cabbage can be grown in the garden over a longer period of time. The following schedule provides an overview.
When should you grow and harvest savoy cabbage?
Savoy cabbage comes in early, medium and late varieties. Early varieties are sown from March and harvested from July. Medium varieties are sown from April, and the harvest lasts from August to November. Winter savoy cabbage is sown from July to August and can be harvested from October to April.
Early varieties
Early savoy cabbage is sown under glass from March or grown on the warm windowsill. From March onwards, the seeds are sown in the cold frame and from April they can be sown directly into the bed. Pre-grown plants come into the bed from the end of April. Depending on the time of sowing, the savoy cabbage harvest begins in July.
Medium varieties
The cultivation of medium varieties begins in April in the cold frame, the time for planting out is from May to July. The harvest lasts from August to November.
Winter savoy cabbage
Late varieties for the winter harvest are hardy and can withstand temperatures of around -10°C. They are sown from July to August and can be harvested from October. If overwintering is successful, fresh savoy cabbage will be available from the garden until April.
