The grapefruit, a chance cross between an orange and a grapefruit, was discovered around 1750 on the Caribbean island of Barbados. Even today, the Caribbean islands and the south of the USA (especially Florida) are among the main growing areas of the bittersweet fruit. Grapefruit exported to Europe, on the other hand, usually comes from Israel or South Africa.
When is grapefruit season?
Grapefruit's peak season is between October and March, but is available all year round. It comes mainly from the Caribbean, southern USA, Israel and South Africa. The fruit contains many valuable vitamins, especially vitamin C and B vitamins.
Winter vitamin bomb
The grapefruit contains a lot of vitamin C as well as a whole range of valuable vitamins from the B series. These ingredients make the fruit so valuable - especially as a prevention against colds in winter, which is already low in vitamins. It's a good thing that grapefruit is in peak season, especially between the months of October and March. However, the fruit is available all year round, although in the warm season it is mainly imported from South Africa. By the way: Not all grapefruit are the same, because there are a whole range of different grapefruit varieties. Fruits with lighter skin and light flesh taste more bitter than red-fleshed specimens.
Tips & Tricks
Purchased grapefruits can be stored for two to three weeks, preferably in a cool place. If the fruits are not eaten fresh, they will ripen again during storage and develop a sweeter, milder taste.
