Growing raspberries in your own garden is not difficult. In the right location and good soil, the delicious fruits thrive wonderfully and produce rich harvests. What you should consider when planting!
How do I plant raspberries correctly?
When planting raspberries, you should choose a sunny, wind-protected location. The ideal planting time is in autumn; the soil should be thoroughly loosened and mixed with compost. A planting distance of 50 cm between the bushes, 1.50 m between the rows and a supporting framework ensure successful raspberry cultivation.

Choosing the right location
All raspberry varieties, whether summer raspberries or autumn raspberries, prefer a light, sunny, somewhat sheltered location.
The soil must be loosened thoroughly. The soil must not have any thickenings. Rainwater must be able to drain away easily so that it does not become waterlogged.
If the soil is very calcareous, you should add a lot of rotted manure or compost.
The best planting time
If you plant raspberries in autumn, you will harvest some fruit next year.
You can also plant the bushes in spring. The harvest of summer raspberries then fails completely, and of autumn raspberries only very few fruits ripen.
Prepare the floor
The soil is loosened well with a digging fork (€139.00 on Amazon), freed from weeds and mixed with ripe compost.
Dig a planting hole that is slightly larger than the root ball. The hole should be deep enough so that the roots are covered by about five centimeters of soil.
If you want to prevent the raspberries from spreading too much in the garden, place a root barrier around the planting site or rows.
Maintain planting distance
A distance of approximately 50 centimeters should be maintained between bushes and at least 1.50 meters between rows.
Set scaffolding and mulch soil
Especially summer raspberries but also some tall autumn raspberry varieties need a framework to support the canes.
Depending on the variety, set up a V-trunk or knotted trellis as soon as you have planted the raspberries.
The soil under the raspberries must be kept free of weeds. Sprinkle a layer of bark mulch or hay around the bushes.
Tips & Tricks
When planting raspberries, make sure you leave enough space between rows. This will prevent the soil around the roots from becoming compacted due to foot traffic when harvesting or pulling weeds. Loose soil is the best prevention against rootstock diseases.
