Lemon trees are offered in different growth forms. Standard stems are particularly popular. The price of a lemon tree depends on its size and age.
How much does a lemon tree cost?
Prices for lemon trees vary depending on size, age and growth habit. Young bushes cost around 15 to 25 euros, while tall stems of the same size cost around 10 euros more. Older and larger trees can cost 50 to 60 euros or even several hundred euros for rare specimens.
Where can I buy a lemon tree?
Basically you can buy lemon trees anywhere. Possible addresses are:
- Garden centers and hardware stores
- Nurseries and nurseries specializing in Mediterranean / exotic plants
- various internet shops
- or private providers.
The plants on offer are represented in (almost) all age groups, sizes and growth forms, so that you can choose the lemon tree that is right for you. Private sellers usually sell old solitaires that they can no longer or do not want to accommodate and sometimes also their own offspring. When shopping online, you should definitely make sure to buy your tree from a reputable dealer - this cannot be mentioned often enough, because there are many black sheep in the vastness of the World Wide Web. By the way, lemon trees can generally only be delivered in frost-free weather. As a rule, the trees already bear flowers and perhaps even some fruit.
He alth check before purchase
You should always check the he alth of the lemon tree you are considering before making any purchase to avoid any unpleasant surprises. Here comes our checklist:
- The roots should be firm and sufficiently developed.
- There should be no clay in the substrate.
- Check shoots and leaves thoroughly for signs of feeding and pests.
- Pay attention to the growth rate: Does the tree give a strong and he althy overall impression?
- What color are the leaves? These should be bright green and not appear faded or even yellowish in color.
Prefer grafted plants
Refinements are to be preferred, as the processing base usually has a much better robustness and resistance to diseases and climatic influences. In addition, grafted lemon trees bloom and fruit much earlier because their youth phase has been greatly shortened. If possible, a bitter orange or bitter lemon should have been used as the finishing base (these are frost hardy and therefore particularly resistant).
Reasonable prices for a lemon
Basically, half or tall stems are more expensive than lemon bushes. A young bush, around 20 to 30 centimeters high, usually costs around 15 to 25 euros, but a standard tree of the same size costs an average of 10 euros more. In addition to the growth habit, it is primarily the height and thus the age that determine the price. Lemon trees three to four years old cost around 35 euros and up; for older trees, 50 to 60 euros are also appropriate. Very old and large solitaires are rare and can cost several hundred euros.
Tips & Tricks
Lemons are popular espalier plants that are often available commercially as round or flat espaliers. These plants require particularly intensive care, as well as a protected (if possible covered) outdoor space.
