Hidden deep underground, they are easily forgotten. But it is advisable not to completely lose sight of them. Why and what characteristics define the roots of the hazelnut will be explained in more detail in the following lines.
What are hazelnut roots like?
The hazelnut roots have a horizontal taproot and vertical lateral roots that lie close to the soil surface. They are robust and can reach up to 4 meters deep, with densest roots between 30 and 40 centimeters.
Essential characteristics of hazelnut roots
There is a horizontal reaching taproot and some vertical lateral roots located close to the surface of the earth. The root system bites firmly into the soil:
- maximum depth: 4 m
- densest structure: at a depth between 30 and 40 cm
- due to the depth of the roots: when transplanting or removing a hazelnut bush or hazelnut tree, dig at least this deep
But the considerable depth also has advantages: There is usually no danger for surrounding plants of being displaced by the roots of the hazelnut. In addition, the intensively branched roots are extremely robust and true survivors.
Gladly underestimated
Even after the hazelnut has been radically pruned, the roots often sprout runners. For this reason, a hazelnut bush can be difficult to remove. On the other hand, it is extremely easy to propagate this plant
Tips & Tricks
Since the roots are extremely willing to survive, the choice of location should be carefully considered!
