Fig trees need sufficient moisture - however, wet feet are not comfortable for the sun-hungry fig. If drought persists, the fig produces small, juiceless fruits, the leaves turn brown and are dropped. Therefore, water carefully and always when the soil feels dry.
How should you properly water a fig tree?
To water a fig tree properly, you should thoroughly moisten the root ball without causing waterlogging. For potted plants, completely water the pot ball. Use soft rainwater or filtered tap water as figs are sensitive to limescale.
Flowing figs in the garden
When flooding, soak the root ball of the outdoor fig thoroughly, similar to what happens during a heavy downpour. Over the next few days, let the soil dry out until only the root ball feels slightly moist. Then water the fig thoroughly again.
Keep potted plants sufficiently moist
Potted figs need a lot of water when they are fully leafy, as they evaporate a lot of moisture through their large leaves. Therefore, always water enough so that the pot ball is completely moistened. A water supply in the saucer should only be left in exceptional cases on very hot days, as waterlogging leads to root rot.
Tips & Tricks
The fig reacts sensitively to calcareous irrigation water. Therefore, always use soft rainwater or filtered tap water.
