Can peanuts be planted in Germany?

Peanuts are easy to care for, but need a lot of warmth to grow. The soil temperature should not fall below 18 degrees during the growing season. Then peanuts can also be grown outdoors.

Do peanuts have to be preferred?

Since peanuts have a very long growing time, it is recommended to grow them on the windowsill or in the greenhouse.

How are peanuts sown?

From February onwards, the dried kernels removed from the shell are placed approximately three centimeters deep in pots with garden soil (€10.00 on Amazon) or cactus soil.

The soil must be kept moist so that the seed does not dry out. However, waterlogging must be avoided at all costs.

The pots are placed in a very warm, bright, sunny location if possible.

When is the best time to plant?

The frost-sensitive plants are only allowed outdoors from the end of May. In harsher areas the soil temperature is too low, so it is better if you plant the peanut plants in larger pots. They are then continued to be cared for in the greenhouse or on the windowsill.

Where do peanuts thrive?

  • Very sunny location
  • Temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees
  • Loose, well-drained soil
  • Avoid waterlogging at all costs

What soil do peanuts grow well in?

Peanuts do not have high demands on the soil. Simple garden soil is usually enough.

The soil must not be compacted as waterlogging could develop.

How large should the planting distance be?

Maintain a distance of at least 15 centimeters between plants in the row and 25 centimeters between rows.

How should you plant peanut plants?

The peanut plants are planted so deeply in the soil that the root ball is well covered. Before planting, the soil should be loosened so that the inflorescences can easily penetrate the ground.

To protect against fungus gnats, you should sprinkle a layer of sand around the plants.

When can peanuts be harvested?

The harvest season begins at the end of August and lasts until the onset of frost. Plants that are ready to harvest can be recognized by the fact that they turn yellow.

How do peanuts propagate?

Propagation occurs via the seeds, which ripen in the pods five to eight centimeters deep underground.

The kernels must dry in the shell and are only released immediately before sowing. The brown membrane is not removed. Peanuts can also be sown with the shell on, but then it will take longer for the seeds to germinate.

Tips & Tricks

Peanuts contain a lot of histamine. Many allergy sufferers therefore react to consumption with severe, sometimes life-threatening symptoms. Dogs should also eat little or no peanuts, as histamine can trigger epilepsy attacks.
