Passion fruit is not only an important ingredient for many fruit juices, but also a delicious fruit for fresh consumption. With a little patience, it can also be grown from seeds in a pot on the balcony.
How to grow passion fruit from seeds?
To grow passion fruit seeds, use fresh seeds from commercially available fruits or purchase them from garden stores. Remove the pulp, plant the seeds in growing medium and ensure constant temperatures of 25-30 degrees Celsius.
The difference between passion fruit and passion fruit
The two names passion fruit and passion fruit are often used interchangeably in this country. Another contributing factor to the confusion between passion fruit and passion fruit is that bottles of passion fruit juice usually show cut passion fruit. The passion fruit is also the fruit of a passion flower, but the fruits look different on the outside despite having a similar pulp. Passion fruits are passion fruits with a yellow colored skin, in contrast to the usually purple to dark brown passion fruits.
Getting seeds for growing passion fruit
Since most passion flowers produce very characteristic and magnificent flowers, seeds for growing the plants are also available from well-stocked garden shops (€2.00 on Amazon). Since it is a tropical plant species that can only be cultivated as a house and container plant in this country, the seeds can be grown all year round. You can also use seeds from commercially available passion fruit fruits, but you must first remove any adherent pulp from them using some kitchen paper. You should also not store the seeds for too long before sowing, as passion fruit seeds have limited germination potential.
The right care for growing passion fruit seeds
Due to their tropical origin, passion fruit seeds ideally require a germination temperature of between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius. Therefore, different locations are available for cultivation:
- in pots covered with cling film on the windowsill
- in an indoor greenhouse with heating mat
- in the greenhouse with constant temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius
If possible, use a growing substrate that is free of weed seeds and fungal spores. Since passion fruit seeds sometimes take up to two months to germinate, they will otherwise be overgrown by foreign plants. After germination, the plants can be placed in a pot on a sunny house wall during the summer months.
Tips & Tricks
Since the passion fruit is a climbing plant, you should give it a trellis or scaffolding to climb up. But pay attention to its size so that you can still overwinter the passion fruit in a place with around 10 degrees Celsius.
