Is catnip edible?

No toxic active ingredients
Catnip does not contain any substances that have a harmful effect on the organism. It is non-toxic to both humans and animals. However, since it can cause intoxication-like states, it should probably be used in doses. In cats, for example, too high a dosage has led to aggressive behavior.
Catnip as a spice plant
Catnip was already used in the Middle Ages. But in most cases their healing power was used rather than their spicy power. In its homeland, Persia, it is used as a spice for various traditional dishes.
Catnip can be eaten in different ways. You can snack on the flowers on their own or use them in salads and desserts. Their color makes them extremely decorative. They taste sweet and slightly minty. The leaves can also be used for smoothies, for example. The varieties with lemon flavor in particular are a welcome change to dishes.
The catnip for tea
The use of catnip for tea is more well known in this country. Fresh or dried leaves can be used for this. The tea is considered a popular home remedy for various ailments. However, pregnant women should not drink it - except when giving birth - as it promotes labor.
The leaves should not be boiled, but rather poured with hot water. The essential oils would evaporate during cooking. The brew should be left to steep for 20 minutes. If you want to use tea to relieve physical discomfort, you should drink a cup of it three times a day.
Catnip as a medicinal plant
A good side effect of catnip is that it has positive effects when consumed or drunk as a tea. Their essential oils and the alkaloid actinidine are responsible. The catnip works:
