Several depressions have been created on the lawn in which rainwater collects or accumulates. The terrace or walkway was subsequently built up and the lawn surface is now a few centimeters lower. How to raise the lawn?

How to raise the lawn?

To raise the lawn, you can cut off slabs of lawn and fill in topsoil, gravel or a sand-humus mixture. For larger areas, the old lawn can be removed and topsoil spread before new lawn seeds are spread or turf is laid.

Methods to raise a lawn

  • Cut lawn slabs
  • Removing old lawn
  • Remove weedy lawn with weed killer
  • Spread a thick layer of topsoil
  • Create turf

Raise a small piece of grass a few centimeters

If the distance between the lawn surface and the patio area is several centimeters, raise the lawn as follows:

Cut out individual grass slabs along the edge up to 20 centimeters deep and lay them on their side. Fill the soil with topsoil, gravel or a sand-humus mixture enough to compensate for the difference. Level the ground and give it a few days to settle.

Then put the grass slabs back on and step on them carefully. If you water the lawn well now, you should no longer be able to see any of the work after just a few days.

Raising large lawns

For very large areas, it is easier to remove the old lawn and add a correspondingly thick layer of topsoil.

If the lawn is very sparse, you can simply cover the old lawn with soil. You should carefully remove weeds beforehand, especially dandelions, groundweed, couch grass and field horsetail.

Then reseed the lawn or lay a turf that has already formed a dense turf.

Filling depressions in the lawn

Small depressions in the lawn can be filled with topsoil or humus-rich garden soil. If the layer is only a few centimeters thick, the old grass will penetrate the new layer of soil after a while.

With deeper holes, all you can do is fill the depressions completely and sow new lawn seeds. To do this, choose the same seed from the rest of the lawn so that you don't get unsightly shades.

Tips & Tricks

If the floor is very firm, it's worth trying, although it will take some time. Sprinkle a thin layer of fine sand between the lawn plants every two months. Over time, the lawn will lift and the soil will be loosened at the same time.
