Palm lilies can definitely be divided. The method of division depends on the plant variety. Garden yuccas can often be divided directly into several plants, whereas with thick-stemmed indoor yuccas the trunk is divided into several pieces.
How to divide a palm lily?
To divide a palm lily, carefully remove garden yuccas and cut or saw indoor yuccas into 20-30 cm long pieces. Plant the sections the right way up in fresh soil, seal the cut edge with wax and water well to promote root formation.
How to divide a garden yucca?
If you want to divide your garden yucca, carefully dig up the plant. It is best to use gardening gloves because the leaves of the palm lily have very sharp edges. Divide the plant into several pieces without damaging the roots too much. Remove all broken and injured root parts to prevent diseases from forming there.
Now plant the individual parts in fresh soil and water them well so that new roots form quickly. If the parts of the plant do not have enough roots, they may grow poorly or not at all. Therefore, do not divide your palm lily into pieces that are too small.
How to divide your indoor yucca
The term indoor yucca or yucca palm generally refers to the thick-stemmed Yucca aloifolia. If it becomes too large, the trunk can be divided. Cut or saw the trunk into sections at least 20 – 30 cm long using a sharp tool. Seal the upper cut edge with a special wax. This means no germs can get in there.
The individual pieces of trunk usually grow back without any problems, provided they are planted the right way up and not with the lower part, from which the roots are supposed to grow, sticking out of the ground. Otherwise the trunk cannot grow. To prevent this, you can mark the upper cutting edge with a thread or other marking before cutting. Then you definitely won't mix up the ends.
The most important things in brief:
- Prevent injury to the roots as much as possible when dividing
- don't make pieces that are too small
- Water young plants well
- Seal the upper cut edge of the trunk pieces with wax
- Be sure to plant sawn trunk pieces the right way round!
Tips & Tricks
You should always water young plants well to stimulate root formation. Be sure to avoid waterlogging, otherwise the sensitive roots will rot.
