The propagation of the palm lily is quite easy. On the one hand, it forms offshoots that just need to be planted, and on the other hand, its creeping roots like to sprout again. This makes it easy to divide the palm lily.
How to propagate a palm lily?
The palm lily can be propagated simply by cuttings or division. In the case of offshoots, they only need to be planted, while division separates the mother plant into several parts and plants them separately. With either method, be sure to plant the yucca correctly and water it well.
Propagation through offshoots
Since some palm lilies produce offshoots themselves, their propagation is quite easy. Even without your intervention, these offshoots take root on their own. When they are about 20 cm tall, plant the young palm lilies in a flower pot. Mix the soil with a little sand beforehand and water the small plants well.
These young plants should only be put outdoors at temperatures of around 20 °C. Offshoots planted in summer can be planted out immediately after rooting. However, if you only planted your young palm lilies in autumn, it is better to keep the sensitive plants indoors for the first winter. In the next they can also tolerate the winter cold and frost down to around -20 °C.
Reproduction by division
Propagation by division is a little more complicated; you have to dig up the mother plant. Carefully divide it into two or more parts, remove any injured roots and replant the sections. To start, these new plants should be watered regularly to encourage new roots to form. If there is not enough root material, it will take a long time for the palm lily to grow well again.
A room yucca can also be divided, but in a slightly different way. If the plant has become too large, cut or saw the trunk into several pieces. Seal the upper cut surface so that no germs can penetrate there and plant the sections in fresh soil. Be sure to plant the trunk parts the right way up, otherwise no new yucca will grow from them.
The most important tips:
- Propagation easily possible through offshoots
- plant rooted offshoots immediately
- Dividing the garden yucca is best done in spring
- Always plant sections of the trunk the right way up
Tips & Tricks
Propagation through cuttings is much easier than dividing a palm lily. Only divide thick-stemmed houseplants if they get too big.
